Chapter Six
Overview
Mikail returns bloodied but unharmed and reveals an assassination attempt on Queen Quilimar, closing palace access and complicating the mission. The group pivots: Sora and Aeri will approach General Vikal, Mikail seeks the Yusanian ambassador, and Euyn targets the underwater Temple of Knowledge for Rule exceptions. A raw confrontation about the crown and Euyn’s past fractures trust, and Sora resolves not to back Euyn’s claim.
Summary
Mikail returns to the inn drenched in others’ blood after evading Khitan spies. He remains unfazed, insists on bathing, and later confirms someone likely tipped off the spymaster. During lunch, Sora tests the food for poison, reflecting on her skills and the pressure of saving Daysum and Tiyung.
Mikail reports a recent assassination attempt on Queen Quilimar, which has sealed palace access, making their plan to reach the throne far more difficult. With only four weeks left, the group reallocates tasks: Sora and Aeri will approach General Vikal to gather information and forge access; Royo may accompany them as protection. Mikail will consult the Yusanian Ambassador Zeolin for a path past the Rule of Distance, while Euyn must stay hidden due to his bounty.
Euyn proposes researching exceptions to the Rule of Distance at Khitan’s Temple of Knowledge. Mikail notes the temple lies under a frozen lake within a glass dome, complicating entry but offering a potential legal loophole for an audience.
Tension spikes when Euyn confronts Mikail about trying to destroy the crown. Mikail argues no one should be immortal and cites the Baejkins’ abuses as justification. The accusation reopens wounds; Aeri abruptly leaves in distress, and Sora follows, seething at Euyn’s past hunts and privately rejecting him as a future king, resolving that someone else must take the black serpent throne.
