Chapter Sixty-Two
Overview
Royo, Aeri, Sora, and Euyn approach Quu to seek the Khitan queen’s support by exposing the king’s plot. Royo and Aeri’s bond deepens, while Sora reveals vengeance as her driving force. Uneasy tensions with Euyn and Royo’s distrust of Mikail foreshadow fractures as the group prepares for a royal reception.
Summary
At daybreak in the Northern Pass, Aeri sleeps against Royo as their sleigh nears Quu. Royo basks in unexpected happiness yet fears he doesn’t deserve it, haunted by past failures and the fear of losing Aeri like he lost Lora. Sora notices their closeness and gently reframes love as a need, not a reward, easing Royo’s guilt.
When Royo asks how Sora endures loss, Sora admits that vengeance keeps her moving, hardening her resolve to settle old scores. Royo is unnerved by her intensity and wonders how Aeri, kind and warm, could be kin to ruthless Baejkins. He recalls the bird-creature’s “Son of Vengeance” riddle and questions whether it was meant for him.
Aeri wakes cheerful and apologetic, and the group confirms they are close to Quu as snow turns to freezing rain. Aeri and Sora discuss their plan: secure the Khitan queen’s support by revealing the king’s scheme, with Sora reminding Aeri that fitness to rule matters more than crowns. Aeri nervously requests a chance to bathe and change before the audience, and Sora arranges a stop at a traveler’s inn.
Euyn balks at dressing for a royal reception, but Sora insists, and Euyn stiffly relents. Royo senses something strained between Sora and Euyn after the failed egg mission and grows wary of Mikail despite past loyalty. As Oligarch Mountain looms, hope and dread mingle; they prepare to face a queen powerful enough to unsettle King Joon.
