Chapter 31: Robin
Overview
Takayubi rebuilds as Misaki tends the unmarked grove and nurtures young Izumo. Robin Thundyil arrives with his son, revealing a network abducting powerful children and a possible godlike enemy who killed his partner via blood control. Misaki verifies the technique, consoles Robin, and urges him to return home. Robin departs after secretly funding Takayubi’s infrastructure, while Misaki and Takeru reaffirm trust and closure.
Summary
As spring returns, Takayubi is a village again. Misaki prays in the lush grove over the mass graves, brings toddler Izumo, and quietly notes his unusual sensitivity to fluids, suspecting rare aptitude. Life resumes: children play, the dojo hums, and construction for Misaki’s planned restaurant advances.
Misaki finds Robin Thundyil unexpectedly visiting—with his toddler son, Daniel. The reunion is tender but restrained; they tour the compound, and Robin meets the children. He praises Misaki’s restaurant plan and deflects offers of pride-wounding aid. They exchange apologies about their youthful past and losses—Mamoru and Daniel’s mother—and Robin’s shaken optimism shows.
In private, Misaki recounts a gray-cloaked littigi assassin and a missing orphan. Robin connects these to a wider pattern: powerful children abducted from unguarded regions to be raised into a future army by a hidden mastermind. He doubts he can stop it after losing Daniel’s mother.
Later, with Takeru present, Robin investigates bloodline techniques. Takeru demonstrates the Whispering Blade and rules it out for a metal cut Robin witnessed. Robin then asks about the mythic Blood Puppeteers. Despite warnings, Misaki agrees to test on Robin’s left pinky; she briefly controls his blood, confirming the immobilization he experienced. Robin realizes the killer may be near godlike and leaves, shaken.
Misaki follows, steadies him before the family shrine, and confronts his fear of failing Daniel. She urges him to live the time he has, not to call his son a mistake, and to return to Livingston to reclaim his strength and purpose. They part with quiet understanding, a promise to be older and wiser next time.
Robin departs after secretly funding new info-com towers, roads, and an orphanage, creating jobs and long-term support. Takeru admits inviting Robin both for the investigation and so Misaki could finally say goodbye. As the sun sets, Misaki embraces the fullness of her grief and love—for Robin, for Takeru, and for her children—and finds lasting peace.
