Chapter 29: The Apprentice

Overview

Imperial and Yammanka officials visit Takayubi; Misaki extracts classified truth from a young jaseli: Ranga’s attacks were tests, military strongholds fell, and Takayubi’s stand helped force a truce. In a fraught meeting, Takeru rejects Imperial aid, asserts leadership, gains Yammanka support, and resolves to rebuild independently and educate their sons abroad.

Summary

Provincial and Imperial officials arrive with Yammanka allies, occupying the damaged Matsuda home. Misaki notes the Yammanka’s respect for Takeru’s power and spots a young, nervous jaseli apprentice. She slips away, taking baby Izumo to soften her approach, and intercepts the apprentice, Moriba Gesseke.

Appealing to Gesseke’s pride and concern, Misaki learns the truth: Ranga mounted coordinated tests on eight targets—four houses and four strongholds. The military bases were overrun; Takayubi’s civilian theonites made the decisive difference, frightening Ranga into truce with Yamma’s mediation. Secrecy is mandatory; the Empire will not credit Takayubi. Misaki thanks Gesseke and departs before emotions about Mamoru surface.

That night, Misaki briefs Takeru. He values the intelligence but rebukes her for acting alone. Misaki, unafraid now, accepts the conflict as growth; they reconcile, with Takeru asking for honesty and vowing protection. In the formal meeting, General Chun lies about military successes and belittles local efforts. Takeru stays calm, refuses future Imperial aid, and positions himself as acting leader, citing years of administrative work.

Amid tense exchanges, Yammanka General Kende publicly supports Takeru’s self-reliance, undercutting the Kaigenese officials. After the meeting, Takeru commits to rebuilding without the Empire and to ending the village’s isolation. He decides their sons will study at Daybreak to avoid another blind generation. Walking home, he and Misaki quietly hold hands for the first time.
