Chapter 21: The Stormlord

Overview

In the aftermath, Setsuko learns of Takashi’s heroic death while Misaki mourns Mamoru and steadies her sons as Hiroshi grasps his new burden as heir. Misaki consoles a shamed, grieving Hyori. Tsusano Kazu arrives, confirming Ishihama was also attacked and tightly controlled by Kaigenese and Yammanka forces. Takeru, Kazu, and Kwang Tae-min discuss likely imperial secrecy and inadequate aid just as Imperial troops arrive requesting the village head.

Summary

Setsuko wakes to news of Takashi’s death. Misaki details his last stand and death jiya, which comforts Setsuko. Misaki then faces her own loss beside Mamoru’s body, steadying Nagasa’s confusion and witnessing Hiroshi realize he is now heir. Terrified by the burden, Hiroshi prays fervently, his jiya freezing the snow.

With the shrine destroyed and cemetery leveled, Misaki and Setsuko discuss impractical rites amid widespread loss. They sit with Hyori as Yukino Dai’s body is laid out. Hyori, drowning in shame from her assault, deems herself unworthy; Misaki insists the blame lies with the dishonorable enemy and urges Hyori to send Dai her love.

Tsusano Kazu arrives by sea with vassals. Misaki embraces her brother, learns Ishihama’s refugees are provisionally housed, and brings Kazu to see Mamoru’s body. She then fetches Takeru, who remains focused on relief work and walks past Mamoru without looking.

Takeru gathers Kazu and Kwang Tae-min for a private meeting on the mountain. Kazu confirms the Ishihama “storm” was a Ranganese attack and warns that Kaigenese and Yammanka troops enforced secrecy, relocated survivors, and restricted access. He fears similar control is coming to Takayubi.

Kwang cautions that imperial aid will likely be insufficient for Takayubi’s forty-two survivors with scant shelter and food. Takeru insists on obedience to the Emperor, while Kazu questions Ranga’s strategy of striking strongholds. Misaki suggests the aim may be to weaken the great houses, though the losses seem wasteful.

Before they can conclude, a Tsusano retainer reports that Imperial troops have arrived and are asking for the village head. Takeru prepares to meet them, with tensions high over looming secrecy and support.
