Chapter 28: The Stranger

Overview

Misaki and Takeru survive an assassination attempt by a littigi who weaponizes an illusion of Mamoru and self-detonates. The village locks down after Ginkawa Yukimi goes missing, likely taken off the mountain. Takeru reconnects with his sons and vows to train Hiroshi, while he and Misaki finally confront their painful pasts and reconcile.

Summary

After ending their duel, Misaki heals Takeru’s neck and chooses to stay with him while he grieves Takashi and Mamoru. On their way back, Kwang Chul-hee finds them, but a second figure appears: an illusion of Mamoru. Misaki recognizes the light ripples of a littigi’s trick and shatters the guise with ice, revealing a tattooed foreigner.

They capture the assassin, and Misaki interrogates him. When he triggers a voice-activated bomb, Takeru shields Misaki and Chul-hee as the mountain shakes. The men of Takayubi confirm the remains. Concerned there may be accomplices, Takeru and Misaki rush home and organize village security.

Takeru publicly softens, reassuring Nagasa and committing to train Hiroshi at dawn. Soon Ameno Kentaro reports a missing child: Ginkawa Yukimi. Misaki teaches villagers how to detect littigi illusions, while Takeru senses through the snow and concludes Yukimi has been taken off the mountain.

That evening, women gather to cook and discuss suspects. Misaki doubts an Imperial intimidation play and considers Ranganese or other foreign ties, recalling Livingston’s gray-cloaked Kalleyso but finding the details mismatched. The village increases watches and safeguards.

Later, Takeru and Misaki speak openly. Misaki reveals her past fighting crime in Livingston; Takeru shares the deadly toll of Matsuda–Yukino bloodlines on his mother, his father’s abuse, and his fear of recreating a violent marriage. They acknowledge years of silence, choose to communicate, and find fragile peace as they fall asleep together.
