Chapter 18: The Shelter

Misaki, clutching Hiroshi, is confronted by Takeru, who has killed the last Ranganese outside. An imperial broadcast orders an imminent airstrike, and Takeru commands an immediate evacuation to the mountain shelter. Misaki gathers Nagasa, Izumo, and Ayumi while Takeru carries an unconscious Setsuko. Outside, Kwang Chul-hee arrives with news of the shelter census and missing families.

Learning the Yukinos are unaccounted for, Misaki seizes Chul-hee’s wakizashi and sprints to the Yukino compound. She finds Ryota dead and Hyori being assaulted; Misaki decapitates the attacker, unleashing a powerful dying surge that hurls her across the room. She cleans and clothes Hyori, then forces the traumatized woman to flee despite Hyori’s pleas to be left.

As bombs begin to fall, Takeru meets them, still bearing Setsuko. On the ascent, Atsushi begs Takeru to rescue his grievously wounded father; Takeru carries Atsushi instead, prioritizing the living. A near strike throws Misaki down, but Takeru raises and tilts a slab of ice, sliding everyone into the shelter under gunfire.

Inside, Kwang Tae-min confirms that Mamoru, Yukino Dai, and most men are missing. Takeru states that when he left, only Takeru’s brother and Mamoru held the line against overwhelming numbers, and no one else is coming. Hyori screams at the confirmation that Dai likely fell; Misaki’s hope collapses.

Through the night, the bunker becomes a hell of injuries, grief, and claustrophobic terror. Misaki, concussed and exhausted, dissociates amid the cries, unable to comfort her children, while Takeru stands rigid at the door, impassive and unreachable. Misaki endures the despairing night, feeling utterly alone.
