Chapter 5: The Forge

Overview

Mamoru brings Kwang to the Kotetsu numu village, where Kwang is treated and fed. Grandma Chizue recounts Matsuda Takeru’s origins and the Whispering Blade, reinforcing the Matsuda–Kotetsu bond. Shaken, Mamoru probes Zilazen glass lore and learns Kaigen lacks it. He and Kwang part on warmer terms, while a hidden Zilazen sword lies beneath Mamoru’s home.

Summary

Mamoru guides injured Kwang along the stream to the numu village, drawn by forge light. The Kotetsu family welcomes them; swordsmith Kotetsu Katashi treats Kwang’s broken arm and wounds while Tamami feeds them. Grandma Chizue pointedly notes Kwang as an outsider and senses Mamoru’s unsettled jiya.

As Kwang is splinted, Grandma Chizue recounts the history of the Matsuda–Kotetsu bond and Matsuda Takeru: the castle’s razing, Takeru’s rescue by Kotetsu Kenzou, his training, return, and the first use of the Whispering Blade to kill Yukino Izumi. Takeru then preserved Falleya law, allied with the Yukino house, and formalized lifelong numu–koro patronage.

Kwang questions the plausibility of ice cutting steel, while Grandma insists on the technique’s legacy. Kotetsu Katashi affirms that not all Matsudas master the Whispering Blade but expresses confidence in this generation. The tale unsettles Mamoru, who wrestles with Takeru’s embrace of foreign ideals and his own shaken certainty.

Seeking clarity, Mamoru asks about Yammanka/Zilazen glass. Kotetsu explains Zilazen glass is a guarded Yammanka bloodline craft; Kaigen lacks such machines or weapons. Discussion turns to rare Zilazen glass swords. After eating, Katashi sends them off; the boys walk in dawn light, grow friendlier, and agree to first names.

They part near the western village. Unbeknownst to Mamoru, a Zilazen glass sword lies hidden beneath his family’s kitchen floorboards, a secret foreshadowing future revelations.
