Overview

Aunt Lydia meets Commander Judd, conceals Aunt Sally’s role in Aunt Adrianna’s death, and learns Gilead has uncovered Mayday’s microdot communications. She then resumes her origin story: mass detentions, public executions, and her removal to interrogation. After isolation and beatings, Lydia is abruptly pampered, then presented with a brown-robed garment, signaling her coerced path to becoming an Aunt.

Summary

A junior Eye summons Aunt Lydia to Commander Judd. He cites his Wife’s illness, then raises the Pearl Girl killed in Canada. Lydia feigns ignorance and grief, while privately recalling that Aunt Sally confessed to killing Aunt Adrianna in self-defense. Lydia covers it up, sequestering Sally at a retreat to keep her incoherent and the narrative controllable.

Judd reports that a burglary at the used-clothing store uncovered Mayday’s microdot camera system, confirming a covert channel with an unknown contact inside Gilead. Lydia performs loyalty and vows to help identify the recipient, concealing her own knowledge and intentions.

Lydia returns to her manuscript and resumes her coup-era account: women lawyers and judges are herded into a stadium, deprived of sanitation and sleep, and forced to watch daily executions. Brown-robed women appear among the firing squads; one turns her gun on a male guard and is immediately killed. Lydia bonds with fellow judge Anita, who is taken away one night and never returns.

The next night Lydia is seized and brought to a repurposed police station bearing the Eyes’ symbol, where she first meets Commander Judd. He demands cooperation; when Lydia refuses a blank commitment, he sends her to the “Thank Tank,” an isolation cell where she endures darkness, filth, staged or real torture sounds, and three rounds of beatings and tasings. She hardens herself with a vow of revenge.

Without warning, Lydia is moved to a hotel for three days of food, showers, and rest, restoring her strength and sense of self. On the third day, she finds a brown-robed garment like those worn by the female shooters. She puts it on, recognizing that her coerced transformation into an Aunt has begun.
