Overview

Aunt Vidala challenges Jade’s authenticity, pressing for interrogation. Aunt Lydia counters by securing Commander Judd’s protection for Jade and arranging medical transfer of his ailing Wife, Shunammite, to Ardua Hall. In private, Lydia weighs two fates: exploit Nicole to detonate her plot against Judd and Gilead, or betray Nicole and cement her own power.

Summary

Aunt Lydia is caught writing in the Ardua Hall library when Aunt Vidala intrudes, criticizing Lydia’s “heretical” reading and hinting at suspicion. Over drinks, Aunt Vidala fixates on Jade’s “God and Love” tattoo and demands interrogation, claiming Jade may be a Mayday infiltrator. Aunt Lydia deflects, arguing for patience and surveillance.

Concerned that Vidala’s zeal could ruin larger plans, Aunt Lydia seeks an immediate audience with Commander Judd. At Judd’s home, she finds his Wife, Shunammite, visibly ill and fearful. Lydia promises to secure permission to have Shunammite treated at Ardua Hall’s clinic, implying protection from Judd’s lethal pattern.

In Judd’s study—laden with trophies and revealing tastes—Aunt Lydia presents the problem: Vidala suspects Jade and wants to interrogate her, which would jeopardize publicly presenting Jade as Baby Nicole. Lydia requests an Eyes order shielding the girl and warns that Vidala is unreliable. Judd agrees and also sanctions Shunammite’s transfer to Ardua Hall, appreciating the cover it provides if she were to “develop a fatal illness.”

Alone, Aunt Lydia outlines her crossroads. She can risk everything by using Nicole to ferry explosive evidence that could push Judd and Gilead over the brink, accepting exposure and death if it fails. Or she can betray Nicole, hand her to Judd for a brief propaganda triumph followed by likely elimination, thereby securing dominance over Ardua Hall and neutralizing Vidala—at the cost of Shunammite and others.

Lydia contemplates destroying her clandestine manuscript—and with it her future reader—to erase all trace of her dissent. She ends the night oscillating between vengeance and self-preservation, postponing the decision to tomorrow.
