Overview

Nicole is swept into agreeing to enter Gilead and undergoes accelerated preparation. Garth hardens her physically and tactically while Ada coaches her in Gilead-style prayer and cover. They craft a street-recruitment plan via Pearl Girls, assign the alias “Jade,” and mark her with a distinctive tattoo. Despite fears of a trap, Nicole commits.

Summary

Nicole realizes she has effectively agreed to enter Gilead after encouragement from Elijah and her own sense of obligation to Melanie, Neil, and other victims. Ada and Elijah begin a rapid training program to prepare her for the mission the anonymous source has conditioned on her involvement.

Garth runs physical and defensive drills—stamina work, strikes, blocks, and a preemptive “heartstopper” punch—pushing Nicole to embrace decisive violence. Ada pressures Nicole to master blinding techniques using a dummy, stressing survival over squeamishness. Nicole develops a shy crush on Garth but assumes there’s no future beyond the mission.

Concurrently, Ada tutors Nicole in Gilead-style prayer and piety to fit in, insisting on seriousness and avoiding swearing. Ada reveals she grew up in the region before Gilead and that Elijah fled a purge, framing their motives as personal.

They outline the insertion plan: Nicole will pose as a street teen so Pearl Girls will recruit her. Garth will shadow her and pose as her boyfriend until pickup, warding off threats. To avoid suspicion, Nicole must not seem too trained; if uncertain, she will “play dumb.” She chooses the alias “Jade.”

A nonnegotiable demand from the source requires a left-forearm scarification tattoo reading “L / G O D / V / E,” presumed to signal the Pearl Girls. Despite moral discomfort, Nicole submits to a full street makeover and the painful raised lettering to prove resolve.

Nicole voices a final fear: the source might be a decoy and the mission a trap to return “Baby Nicole” to Gilead propaganda. Elijah admits it’s a gamble; Ada calls risk inevitable; Garth expresses confidence. Nicole resolves to proceed.
