Day 5

Overview

The blackmailer escalates control by demanding £500 and sending a cruel video proving Telma is alive and being abused. Desperate, Luca fails to secure an advance and assaults a stranger to steal a bank card, withdrawing £700. Shaken, he receives another covert message in the pub as his bond with Liv deepens.

Summary

Luca wakes to a taunting letter: raise £500 by midnight or face consequences. The message mocks his insecurities and promises proof of Telma’s survival. Rattled, he showers, finds an empty envelope slid under the door, and passes ongoing police activity in the hostel, including the blue-suited inspector.

At work, Luca seeks money legitimately. Mr. Galwenny denies an advance; Kamal refuses a loan; the cashier laughs off his plea. During lunch, Luca compulsively checks his corridor spy-cam. He receives a video: an adult Telma, dressed in her torn childhood dress, is forced to declare she’s alive while being hit and threatened with scissors. The clip vanishes, and the number goes dead, confirming both her survival and her peril.

Driven by panic, Luca profiles a confident passerby who just withdrew cash. He assaults the man—Scott Harrison—demands his PIN, and flees. At an ATM, the code works; he withdraws £700, then hides the card in his room, vowing to make amends someday. Guilt and anxiety mount as he waits, bakes cookies that are stolen off his windowsill, and makes unanswered calls to Joe and a brief, evasive one to his mother.

Seeking distraction and answers, Luca goes to the Black Diamond pub. He reconnects with Liv, who flirts, shares crisps, and asks him to the cinema. Amid the crowd, someone slips an envelope beneath his drink: “Go to bed.” Luca scans the room for the watcher, finds nothing, steps outside, and receives Liv’s number—and a brief kiss—before she returns inside, leaving him electrified and still under surveillance.
