Day 14
Overview
Luca receives a taunting letter and chases a childhood lead, ruling out Tyron as the culprit. He learns from a search-group leader that Telma had leukemia and a rapid bone marrow transplant overseen by Dr. Joseph Cerqueira—the same man who bought the Milan house. At the hospital, staff reveal Cerqueira is on leave after the Italian house fire and his autistic daughter’s dog’s killing in Paris, tying recent crimes to him. As Luca fixates on Cerqueira as the likely target, a new envelope is slipped under his door.
Summary
At dawn in his mother’s apartment, Luca reads a new taunting letter that references a childhood incident where he defended Telma from a bully, Tyron. Disturbed by the writer’s intimate knowledge, Luca visits his old school and confirms Tyron’s identity, then finds Tyron online: now a renowned double amputee athlete, making him an unlikely culprit.
Believing the writer must be someone who knew the family or learned details from Telma, Luca visits Monsieur Philippe, the retired teacher who led the local search group. Over coffee, Monsieur Philippe reveals a crucial secret: Telma had leukemia and underwent a rapid bone marrow transplant under Dr. Joseph Cerqueira at a nearby cancer hospital. The disclosure reframes Luca’s memories of Telma’s “sweeties” as immunosuppressants.
Realizing Cerqueira also bought Luca’s family house in Milan, Luca rushes to the hospital to confront him but learns from staff that Cerqueira is on leave. A colleague mentions his recent crises: the Italian house burned down and, two days later, his autistic daughter’s dog was killed in Paris. These events mirror crimes Luca was forced to commit, directly linking Cerqueira’s life to the blackmailer’s demands.
Shaken, Luca leaves, fixates on Cerqueira as the likely target the blackmailer wants him to kill, and briefly tries to contact Liv. That night, as he wrestles with the ultimatum to choose and kill someone to save Telma, he hears an envelope being slipped under the apartment door, signaling the blackmailer’s continued proximity and control.
