Day 17

Overview

Luca writes and mails a confession-filled letter to his comatose mother, concluding she caused Uncle Tonino’s fatal crash for the Milan house. In a village shop he receives a stalker’s coded message, rushes back, and is arrested after Liv is found traumatized and accuses him of assault. Taken to Camden, Luca faces grave charges until lawyer Gordon arrives and reveals police seized a silicon mask of Luca’s father from Luca’s bag.

Summary

At dawn, Luca writes a heartfelt letter to his comatose mother, confessing he now believes she deliberately rammed Uncle Tonino’s Lancia to force the sale of the shared Milan house. He thanks her, declares his love, and mails the letter before Liv wakes, reflecting that all strands—family betrayals and Christine Lebeau’s suicide—are part of one story.

In the village shop, a nervous clerk delivers a planted message—“You’ve known everything for nine days”—and shows a photo of Luca leaving Monsieur Philippe’s home from the previous evening, proving the stalker anticipated him. Realizing the follower could be at the hideout, Luca races back.

He finds emergency vehicles at the house and is confronted by police. After ignoring commands, Luca is tasered and restrained. Liv, on a stretcher, sees Luca and, terrified, identifies him as her attacker. Luca is arrested and transported to Camden Police Station.

Interrogated by the same blue-suited inspector, Luca hears the owners’ account: they discovered signs of intrusion, then found Liv upstairs, naked and sobbing, allegedly writing to her brother. The inspector accuses Luca of kidnapping and raping a minor, citing that Luca took Liv’s wallet and phone and hid her clothes, which Luca denies, insisting he and Liv were together and he only sought food and a charger.

A seasoned lawyer, Gordon, arrives, says he can obtain Liv’s letter, and urges full honesty. He then reveals police examined Luca’s bag and found a silicon mask modeled on Luca’s father’s face, deepening the mystery and Luca’s peril as the planned confrontation with Cerqueira looms.
