Day 18
Overview
Liv’s letter accuses Luca of rape and kidnapping, but Gordon’s pub check reveals Liv never worked there and staged encounters. Luca contacts Dr. Cerqueira, discloses the coercive letters and his family’s past ownership of the Milan house; Cerqueira reacts fearfully and cuts contact. Released but confined to London, Luca seeks help to leave and receives a video of Telma being beaten, recognizing Liv’s voice, tying her to the blackmail.
Summary
The chapter opens with Liv’s letter to Viggo accusing Luca of harassment, rape, and confinement in a rural house. In custody, Luca insists to his lawyer Gordon that the allegations are lies or misinterpretations, though he admits taking Liv’s phone and money. Luca urges Gordon to verify their first meeting at the Black Diamond pub.
After a brief, hostile exchange with “Star” online about his missing sister Telma, Gordon returns from the pub. He reports that staff recognize Liv only as a pretender who collected glasses and feigned employment, confirming she never worked there. Gordon warns the allegations could still send Luca to prison, and notes Liv has left the country but plans to return to file a complaint.
Determined to force answers, Luca calls the hospital and prompts a video call with Dr. Cerqueira by admitting he burned Cerqueira’s Milan house and killed his daughter’s dog under instruction. Luca explains letters directed his actions, mentions a taxi witness and that the Milan house once belonged to his family. When Gordon names Liv Madelsen, Cerqueira turns pale, stops recording, and blocks them.
Police then release Luca with travel restrictions and seize his papers. Outside, Luca finds in his bag a silicone mask resembling his father’s face, which he believes Liv or her brother planted. Gordon, increasingly sympathetic, gives Luca a ride and his contact details.
Desperate to continue his search, Luca calls Monsieur Philippe to help him leave London without a passport, invoking Telma. While waiting on a bench, Luca receives a WhatsApp video showing Telma being slapped and taunted. He recognizes the assailant’s voice as Liv’s, realizing she is likely tied to the blackmail and Telma’s abuse.
