Day 19
Overview
Stranded in London by his blackmailers, Luca gets help from Martial and Monsieur Philippe to return clandestinely to France. He confronts Dr. Cerqueira, who confesses he prioritized Telma’s transplant in exchange for Luca’s parents’ house, leading to Stina Madelsen’s death and her family’s vendetta.
With Joe, Luca deciphers the letters’ hidden acrostic—"Luca, your little sister will soon join ours"—confirming Liv and Viggo as abductors and setting a final push toward Copenhagen.
Summary
On Day 19, Luca wakes on a London bench to a taunting letter promising Telma’s death and his helplessness. Determined to act, he ditches his tracked phone and hides in Martial’s car trunk as Martial and Monsieur Philippe ferry him back to France.
At Dr. Cerqueira’s house, Luca’s arrival panics Cerqueira and terrifies Cerqueira’s daughter. Facing exposure, Cerqueira confesses: ten years ago Telma needed a bone marrow transplant; Luca and their parents were incompatible. A rare donor matched both Telma and another child, Stina Madelsen, but the donation couldn’t be split. In exchange for Luca’s parents’ Italian house, Cerqueira prioritized Telma.
Cerqueira explains Stina died two months later; her siblings are Liv and Viggo Madelsen. Nurse Christine Lebeau had overheard and told the Madelsens; Cerqueira recently confronted Christine, after which she died by suicide. Cerqueira failed to link Telma’s abduction to the Madelsens until now. Luca resolves to save Telma and leaves.
Luca meets Joe at the gym, recounts everything. Together they examine the blackmail letters for hidden meaning. Remembering strangers’ phrase “You know everything,” Joe tests the first words of each early letter, revealing an acrostic: “Luca, your little sister will soon join ours.”
Concluding that Liv and Viggo hold Telma and that the family is in Copenhagen, Luca and Joe decide to go there immediately, with one day left on the kidnappers’ deadline.
