Day 21

Overview

Luca and Joe discover documents proving the Madelsens replaced their dead daughter Stina with Telma and plan to kill Telma at the Møn cliffs. Confronted, Liv and Viggo confess to murdering their parents and orchestrating Luca’s torment. In the struggle, Viggo shoots Luca; Liv falls from the cliff, Viggo jumps, and Telma is rescued. At the hospital, Telma lashes out on learning Luca faked Cerqueira’s “murder,” and Luca drifts toward recovery, ending on a counseling memory about his guilt.

Summary

In a hotel after fleeing the alarmed Madelsen house, Luca and Joe open a will addressed to “Stina,” revealing the parents left everything to her and warned against Liv and Viggo. In the same box, photographs chart Stina’s illness, death, and cremation, then Telma’s stalking and abduction, proving the Madelsens recast Telma as their resurrected daughter.

Joe finds a map marking the Cliffs of Møn, where Stina’s ashes were scattered, deducing this is where Liv and Viggo plan to kill Telma. Borrowing a car, they drive to the cliffs and spot Liv and Viggo arriving. The pair’s fleeting intimacy exposes their alliance as they confront Luca and Joe.

Liv taunts Luca in fluent French and, with Viggo’s gun drawn, drags a bound, bruised Telma from the car, forcing her toward the edge. Liv and Viggo confess: after discovering their parents’ will favoring Telma, they murdered them, dug the cellar, and devised an elaborate plan to torment Luca—dyeing Liv’s hair, stalking him online, and framing him.

Luca bluffs that he has killed Cerqueira, prompting Liv to check the fake article and waver. Joe and Luca then rush Viggo; Viggo fires, hitting Luca in the stomach. As Luca collapses, Joe kicks Viggo down, Telma breaks free and rams Liv, who falls off the cliff. Viggo, devastated, looks down and jumps.

In the ambulance, a fading Luca focuses on Telma, who, on learning Luca lied about killing Cerqueira, erupts and tries to stab him with scissors before medics restrain her. Joe reports Luca’s mother is out of her coma as they reach the hospital. The chapter closes with a counseling memory: Luca admits lifelong guilt over Telma’s disappearance during childhood hide-and-seek, revealing the burden he carries.
