Chapter 46
Overview
Summary
Back at the town square at dusk, Nadia parks beside Sadie's rental car, still seething about her humiliation by Pascal. She reenacts his mocking speech praising Debord's sadism as a precondition of greatness, and contrasts Le Moulin's leader-driven dynamic with the leaderless, successful resistance she participated in at Nantes against the airport project. She names René and Florence as the only Moulinards with integrity, and warns Sadie that Pascal will cut her off if he learns of their contact.
Sadie, sensing Nadia's loneliness outweighs her distrust, proposes visiting her in a few days. Nadia reveals she has squatted in a small building at the ruined Château de Gaume, behind the lake, and gives directions. Sadie silently recognizes the site from Bruno's writings, recalling its bloody history—the Cagot Rebellion of 1594, the burning of Loli the horse, the potter's field, and the castle's later use as a prison.
Nadia asks Sadie to bring food for herself and "Bernadette," then opens the trunk to reveal a live pig she rescued from Moulinards who intended to fatten and eat it. She is training Bernadette as a truffle pig, planning to sell black truffles to gourmet markets—a scheme that contrasts with what she calls the commune's unimaginative subsistence farming. Sadie connects "black truffles" to "Neire," the ancient color and secret of the region; Nadia regards her as crazy, while Sadie inwardly judges Nadia the unstable one. Sadie has secured an opening to deepen her infiltration.
