The setting is opulent, with the Château d'If visible in the harbor and the sun setting over pink-glowing jetties.

Sadie joins Vito and Serge on the terrace, where Vito mocks the gaudily dressed wealthy male guests and teases Sadie for her tasteful, demure outfit. Lucien mentions his grandfather flew the Concorde, prompting Vito to needle Serge about his own background. Serge recounts his grandfather's life as a French colonial in Algeria, working as a census taker, then a shopkeeper, fleeing in 1962 after Algerian independence. His grandparents arrived in Marseille as destitute refugees, became embittered, and embraced National Front politics—the reason Serge signed on to Lucien's film, which adapts a novel about wounded bigots.
