Chapter 79
Overview
Summary
At the Dubois place, the narrator spends the afternoon packing equipment and clothes, preparing for her next assignment on Malta. She plans to dump Sadie Smith's wardrobe before flying out, signaling the imminent end of this identity.
In the evening, Google Alerts reveal that news about a document dump and a federal agent codenamed "Amy" has gone viral. Articles speculate on whether she infiltrated other leftist movements and report inflated payment figures. The narrator watches a video of Nancy and her partner being interviewed; Nancy dominates the conversation, while the bearded man's nodding triggers nostalgia in the narrator. Nancy announces they are pursuing a civil case now that they know "Amy's" true identity, a claim the narrator privately scoffs at.
To steady herself, she takes a Xanax with red wine. She reaffirms that for now her identity is Sadie Smith, with a job to finish. She loads the gun she intends to give Burdmoore the next day, so he can "sacrifice himself," and places it on the bedside table. Unable to sleep despite trying to stay alert, she takes a second Xanax and an Ambien before setting her alarm.
