Chapter 83
Overview
Summary
Chants and protest slogans erupt at the fair as a confrontation breaks out on the road. Masked Moulinards form a line against police, who fire tear-gas canisters, sending the crowd into panicked flight. Amid the chaos, the narrator follows Platon and two fair officials who are improvising a route to safety, heading toward the back of the lake, conveniently the same direction as her own escape route along the fishermen's road.
Franck appears on his motocross bike, but rather than fleeing he trails Platon and the two officials at idle. He suddenly accelerates between the men, knocking the two old officials to the ground. He then circles Platon, revving his engine and cutting off every direction Platon tries to flee, terrorizing him.
Desperate, Platon climbs a huge log pile seeking refuge a motorcycle cannot follow. His hard-soled dress shoes slip on the shifting logs, and his attempts to climb higher dislodge more. The pile collapses, burying him. Franck flees the scene at full throttle. The narrator, observing without intervention, runs up the road toward her waiting car and her escape, the assassination's outcome accomplished by accident rather than her plan.
