Chapter 64
Overview
Summary
As the narrator (posing as Sadie) walks back to her Škoda after speaking with Denis and Françoise, Nadia emerges from the church, having arrived in a car the narrator failed to notice. The narrator briefly worries about her own slipping vigilance.
Nadia demands to know what the conversation with the Susa Valley pair was about. The narrator partially admits the truth: she is recruiting bodies to support the planned action at the agricultural fair, framing Pascal's selective inclusion methods as inadequate for a mass disruption.
Nadia reacts with bitterness, predicting that the additional recruits will serve as cannon fodder—kettled and mass-arrested—while Pascal remains a manipulative user. She refuses to warn Denis and Françoise, considering them too devoted to Pascal and Le Moulin to listen. Nadia announces that she and Bernadette are leaving for the Vaucluse to work the truffle season, and the two women part ways.
