Chapter 45

In the evening, the narrator folds laundry while Mary prepares dinner, distracted by two neighboring men repairing a fence. The narrator recognizes Mary’s crush on the taller man and briefly imagines a different, freer life, then recoils at the prospect of losing Mary to an early marriage expected by their faith.

Mary invites the neighbors to stay for dinner. The men are young, polite, and guarded, their faces hidden by beards. As Mary stretches the meal into courses and eagerly questions them, the narrator grows increasingly uneasy, sensing something familiar and threatening in the men’s eyes. Old Caleb watches Mary with concern.

Trying to interrupt the conviviality, the narrator questions the neighbors about where they live, pressing past vague answers. Tension spikes as the table falls silent, Mary seethes, and the boys stare at their plates. The narrator abruptly declares she has been kidnapped, that Old Caleb is not her husband and the children are not hers, and demands to know whether the neighbors will help.

Instead of reacting with force, Old Caleb says nothing, and the neighbors change the subject. Old Caleb plays along, calmly asking Mary to pass the peas. The accusation remains unanswered, exposing the household’s coercive reality while showing the community’s complicity and the narrator’s isolation.
