Summary
On a frigid mid-December day, Natalie insulates the chicken coop, trying to steady her thoughts. She turns to see Old Caleb and Abel approaching up the driveway with two younger bearded men dressed like Old Caleb. A flicker of recognition rushes through her, sparking panic and a powerful, confusing warmth.
Natalie forces herself to keep working, stealing glances as the group reaches the house and then walks toward her. The taller of the younger men meets her eyes with a blank expression. No one speaks to her as they pass the coop, heightening her sense that something critical is happening just out of reach.
Torn between the urge to flee and to throw herself at them, Natalie bites her lip, her mind racing. She wonders if this is a test from God, or if she has just lost her only chance at freedom. Overwhelmed by the pressure and ambiguity, she vomits, left shaken and silent.
