Summary
Natalie ruins a loaf of bread, and the failure magnifies her sense that something is deeply wrong. When Mary minimizes it and orders another boule, the argument escalates until Mary sends Natalie out of the house. Mary and Maeve then leave to gather flowers, while the men work in the barn and the farm seems eerily distracted.
Alone, Natalie wrestles with the impulse to run but settles on a cautious walk down the road, mindful of past beatings and her injured foot. Noah sees her from the barn and asks to join. They proceed slowly, his stick scoring a line behind them like a tether to the farm.
At the farthest point yet from the house, Natalie probes Noah about his chores and outings with Old Caleb. Noah exaggerates responsibilities and claims dangers beyond the road—“wolves and Indians” and spiritual threats—revealing learned fear and likely surveillance. Natalie presses forward, but Noah refuses to go farther.
When Natalie insists, Noah bolts back toward the house. Old Caleb emerges almost immediately, charging down the road. Knowing she cannot flee, Natalie drops to her knees and apologizes, trying to preempt punishment as Old Caleb reaches her.
