Chapter 39

Overview

Harriet formally quits her surgical residency and asserts her autonomy to her shocked parents, choosing happiness over prestige. A candid text exchange with Eloise offers long-needed sisterly support. During her parents’ Montana visit, Harriet’s mother admits past self-sacrifice and fear for Harriet, leading to a mutual understanding. The chapter closes with Harriet grounded in her new life and partnership with Wyn.

Summary

On the day Harriet withdraws from her residency, she calls her parents. They react with shock and urge her to wait, but Harriet asserts the decision is final, promises to handle her loans, and explains she has a pottery studio job because it makes her happy. At the Denver airport, she reveals she is flying “home” to Montana.

Harriet then texts with her sister, Eloise, who checks in after hearing from their mother. Eloise admits past resentment, recognizes the pressure Harriet faced, and expresses pride and support. The exchange opens a new, healthier line of communication between the sisters.

Later, Harriet’s parents visit Montana. Harriet takes them antiquing, on a beginner horseback ride, and to her pottery classes at Gallatin Clay Co. Her dad engages and slowly warms, while her mom remains quiet but civil. Harriet shows them her work, including a blue-glazed bowl for friends, hinting at the parts of herself she previously kept from her parents.

At their departure, Harriet and her mother finally speak honestly. Her mother confesses she once built her life around Harriet’s father and fears Harriet might do the same, clarifying that her concern was never about appearances but about Harriet’s happiness. Harriet reassures her she chose this life for herself, promises to communicate if she struggles, and they exchange I-love-yous.

After the cab leaves, Wyn joins Harriet on the porch. In the quiet, intimate moment that follows, Harriet’s choice feels affirmed: she has stepped away from surgery, redefined family boundaries, repaired her bond with Eloise and her mother, and rooted herself in a shared, everyday life with Wyn.
