Chapter 38
Overview
Harriet sprints out of the airport and reunites with Wyn in the parking lot. She rejects the life that exhausted her and asserts that she wants Wyn and a more present, joyful future. Wyn admits his fear but commits to going anywhere for her. They choose to be together now and figure out the rest later.
Summary
On Sunday, Harriet races out of the airport despite having no flight to catch, determined to reach Wyn as soon as possible. In the parking lot, they spot each other, meet breathless, and acknowledge the incomplete goodbye.
Harriet challenges the idea that Wyn can decide what will make her happy. She lays out what she no longer wants—exhausting work, constant fatigue, and a life lived for milestones—and affirms what she does want: to be near Wyn and his family, to build a life enjoyed in the moment, and to trust her own choices.
Harriet presses Wyn not to mistake his fear for her desires, insisting he cannot label leaving as what she wants. Wyn admits he is scared and recounts how he would have followed her onto any plane just to say goodbye, realizing in the process why they can work.
Wyn commits to doing whatever it takes, even accepting limited time if needed, because there’s nowhere he wouldn’t go for Harriet. He proposes they be together as much and as soon as they can, leaving logistics for later.
When Harriet asks if she can come “home,” Wyn says it isn’t home without her. They embrace, exchange declarations of love, and kiss, marking the end of their separation and the beginning of a new, chosen future together.
