Chapter 32
Overview
In the fallout of the blowup, Harriet isolates, then chooses to confront Wyn. They establish healthy rules for conflict, unpack the wedding-delay misunderstandings, and reveal Harriet blocked Wyn’s number despite his messages. Emotional honesty leads to reconciliation and intimacy. They tentatively decide the week—and their love—are worth fighting for.
Summary
Returning from the confrontation, the group is silent. At the cottage, everyone retreats. Harriet hides in the kids’ room, passing Kimmy and Cleo moving to the guesthouse. Alone, Harriet spirals through fear and shame about hiding the breakup, her need to be “easy,” and memories of post-breakup loneliness.
Restless, she cleans the kitchen, then walks to the bluff, fixating on Sabrina’s accusation about dodging wedding decisions and Wyn’s claim that she never shared feelings. She decides to act, goes to Wyn’s room, and finds his bags packed. Refusing to let him leave, she insists they “fight.”
Wyn outlines healthy fighting rules—no name-calling, time-outs are allowed, care more about each other than being right—crediting Hank. They practice with a minor gripe (dishwasher loading), then address the core issue: Harriet’s wedding indecision made Wyn feel unwanted. Harriet admits she tried to be undemanding while he grieved and hid her needs, pushing him away.
Harriet asks Wyn to voice hurt instead of withdrawing; he admits embarrassment about the week. She confronts him for not fighting for them and not coming to her that night. Wyn reveals she blocked his number and he had sent messages she never received. This mutual clarity dissolves assumptions.
They reconcile physically and emotionally, choosing to stay together that night. After, they discuss forgiving their friends; Wyn feels the week was worth it to see Harriet. Citing Hank’s wisdom—love is apologizing and doing better—they fall asleep together, newly committed to honest communication.
