Chapter 31

Overview

Harriet confronts Sabrina and learns Sabrina already knew about the breakup from Parth and orchestrated the week to push a reunion. Cleo arrives, exposes the manipulation, and declares the group has grown apart. The friends splinter as Cleo takes space and Sabrina storms off, leaving the façade shattered.

Summary

Outside the Hound & Thistle on Friday, Harriet confronts Sabrina and learns Sabrina knew about the breakup. Sabrina explains Parth visited Wyn, glimpsed an unsent apology in Wyn’s phone, and inferred the split. Harriet reels and accuses Sabrina of manipulating the entire week to force a reconciliation.

Harriet’s anger spikes as she connects the week’s engineered situations; Sabrina insists she was helping because Harriet and Wyn belong together. Cleo arrives, revealing the rest of the group didn’t know and calling the scheme a sham, while Sabrina defends her role as the planner who keeps the friendship alive.

The conflict escalates: Sabrina claims Harriet’s indecision cost the relationship, while Harriet counters that she and Wyn can’t make each other happy. Cleo challenges Sabrina’s control, noting everyone is overwhelmed and that Sabrina forced the week despite knowing Wyn’s hesitations. Sabrina argues she had to act because no one else tries.

Cleo states they’re no longer in the same place and that the group avoids real topics. Harriet admits she hid the breakup out of pain; Cleo says friends are the ones to turn to in those moments. Cleo urges acceptance that they’ve grown in different directions and can’t keep pretending.

Sabrina bristles, telling Cleo to leave if she wants. Cleo opts to take space with Kimmy, possibly leaving after a night in the guesthouse. Sabrina goes to get the car as Wyn, Parth, and Kimmy—who heard everything—stand by. Harriet recognizes the relief of truth but wishes for their former “happy place” beyond real life’s reach.
