Chapter 27
Overview
Harriet proposes last-minute wedding touches, pairing with Wyn to secure a cake. Their errand turns tense, erupting into a roadside argument and kiss that exposes unresolved desire. Pressed about a text, Wyn reveals his thriving Montana furniture business and a hidden San Francisco apprenticeship, while Gloria still believes they’re together, deepening Harriet’s heartbreak.
Summary
Over breakfast at the Bluebell Inn, Harriet channels her anxiety into proposing a “proper” wedding for Sabrina and Parth. The group divides tasks with a two-hour limit, and Sabrina assigns Harriet and Wyn to handle the cake, forcing the exes into close quarters.
Driving from bakery to bakery, Harriet and Wyn barely speak. After repeated refusals for a wedding cake, they settle on a “birthday” cake with a joking inscription. On the way back, Wyn pulls over, confronting Harriet about her distance. Their frustration boils over; both admit they don’t want to be just friends, and they kiss urgently.
Harriet stops things to ask about a text from Wyn’s mother. Pressed, Wyn shows her a website selling expensive tables—his work. He reveals he’s been building furniture in Montana, consigning pieces and landing commissions, including for a resort. Harriet is stunned and proud, but also overwhelmed by the life he’s found away from her.
Wyn confesses he secretly apprenticed with a designer in San Francisco, hid it out of embarrassment and fear of failure, and once was told he had “no instincts.” Harriet challenges the put-down and processes how long their disconnect has been growing. Wyn offers to make her a table; she’s moved but conflicted by his new happiness.
When Harriet asks why Gloria was worried, Wyn explains his mother still believes he and Harriet are together and that Harriet is waiting for him. The reminder intensifies Harriet’s hurt. A text from Sabrina ends their time; they return to the house with truths exposed but nothing resolved.
