Chapter 16
Overview
On a stormy day, Sabrina insists the group uphold their Roxy double-feature tradition, while Cleo resists and Harriet negotiates a compromise. Wyn urges Harriet to stop managing everyone. In the cold theater, Wyn and Harriet’s physical closeness reignites unresolved desire, prompting Harriet to bolt for the bathroom, rattled.
Summary
On a rain-lashed Wednesday in Knott’s Harbor, the group wanders shops until Sabrina insists they continue their tradition of a Roxy double feature. Cleo balks at four hours of vampires, and tensions rise. Harriet proposes a compromise—Cleo attends only the first film—and Kimmy offers support, easing the standoff.
At the ticket booth, a teen in a top hat sells tickets. As they enter, Wyn quietly tells Harriet she doesn’t need to orchestrate everyone’s harmony, noting the trip is going well and urging her not to worry. Harriet deflects, but his read unsettles her.
Inside the near-empty theater, the six spread across the front row. Harriet ends up beside Wyn, who keeps his phone angled away until the lights dim. The cold room and jump scares rattle Harriet; Wyn squeezes her hand when Sabrina checks on them, and their pulses sync, intensifying the unresolved pull between them.
They banter about the onscreen violence, and Wyn admits he’s unnerved—but not by the movie—acknowledging the tension between them. Harriet flashes to their abrupt breakup and the hollow aftermath, trying to focus on his flaws but failing. Overwhelmed by the rekindled attraction and memories, Harriet abruptly excuses herself to the bathroom.
