Chapter 24
Overview
Owen and Sir Ulla arrive at the world’s beginning to destroy the yew’s seed and end the time-loop. They meet a young Vivian, who reveals Ulla’s origin as her stillborn child revived by the seed. When Vivian holds Owen hostage to force Ulla’s repeated sacrifice, Owen chooses self-sacrifice, rupturing Vivian’s design and the cycle.
Summary
Owen and Sir Ulla travel back to the beginning, arriving on a bare hilltop before the yew and the forest exist. They uncover the glassy red seed that would become the yew and burn the book, intending to destroy the seed and strand themselves outside the loop.
A young woman approaches, fascinated by the seed’s supposed imperviousness to fire. Owen recognizes her perfume and manner and realizes she is Vivian Rolfe in her youth. She speaks in tangled tenses, confirming she originates from this distant past and remembers many cycles.
Prompted by Ulla, Vivian recounts her origin: sold into a king-scholar’s household, she educated herself and became his favored “student.” Seeking to conquer time, the king needed “a heart never born,” so he drugged her; she miscarried a daughter. Vivian killed him, buried the infant with the dragon-heart seed, and later found the revived child—Ulla—beneath the grown yew, beginning the legend and the loop.
Vivian claims her works—Dominion and centuries of engineered history—justify the sacrifice, but Owen rejects the calculus. Vivian reveals she no longer needs the infant because Ulla always arrives; she intends Ulla to die again so the seed can be planted in Ulla’s body. Ulla refuses the role, driving her sword into the earth rather than herself.
Vivian strikes with practiced speed, seizing Owen and holding a blade to his throat, certain Ulla will trade her life for his. Seeing the cycle about to repeat, Owen chooses differently: he meets Ulla’s eyes and then turns his head into the knife, sacrificing himself to break Vivian’s coercive loop and free Ulla from the fate of perpetual martyrdom.
