Chapter 9
Overview
Vivian confesses she time-traveled, replaced the dying queen, and previously failed to save Dominion without a legend. She asserts Una’s martyrdom must become the binding national story.
Owen writes the propagandistic death chronicle vilifying Ancel. Vivian then uses Owen’s blood on the book to send him back as time resets.
Summary
Reeling from Una’s death and Vivian Rolfe’s revelation as the restored “queen,” Owen is escorted to a cold tower room, then brought to the vault to view Una’s prepared corpse. Vivian joins him, offering condolences and a calculated explanation.
In the vault, Vivian reveals the truth: she cut herself on the enchanted book and was sent back to Yvanne’s deathbed, where she impersonated the dying queen to give Dominion a stronger past. Her first attempt—no quest, no grail, only competent rule—ended in overthrow and Dominion’s collapse. She insists a queen requires a miracle and a story; Una’s sacrifice must become legend.
Vivian frames Ancel as the traitor who enabled the Hinterlanders and struck Una, and argues that only a heroic martyr narrative will unify Dominion. She charges Owen with making Una matter by writing the story that will be remembered. Confronted with guilt and purpose, Owen accepts the task.
Overnight, Owen composes The Death of Una Everlasting, recasting events into a stirring, unequivocal tale of treachery and heroism, crucifying Ancel and sanctifying Una. In the morning, Vivian praises the work as exactly what Dominion needs and promises it will make people remember Una.
As Owen reaffirms his private, truer memory of Una, Vivian suddenly crushes his wounded hand; blood splashes onto the open book. Smiling, she triggers the book’s magic again, and time unravels around Owen.
