Overview
Owen and Una reach Cavallon amid tension and cold. Hinterlanders ambush at the gate; Owen kills the archers, averting Una’s fated death. Inside, Yvanne drinks from the grail and is restored. Ancel treacherously stabs Una; she kills him but dies in Owen’s arms. The rejuvenated queen reveals herself as Vivian Rolfe, exposing a hidden manipulation of events.
Summary
Owen narrates the bleak, freezing ride to Cavallon as Una grows distant. Provoked, Una admits deep, complicated devotion to Queen Yvanne and confesses she nearly chose to kill Yvanne rather than serve or let her die. Owen responds by revealing his own desertion and throat scar, arguing that delivering the grail will erase their sins and fix Una’s legacy.
They reach Cavallon Keep, outwardly flying the queen’s colors but eerily silent. As Una rides under the gate in full armor, archers spring an ambush. Owen defies history and uses his revolver to kill three archers, allowing Una to survive the trap. Una then devastates the Hinterlanders in brutal combat, confirming her terrible, legendary prowess.
Badly wounded by arrows, Una refuses rest and carries the grail before the court. Yvanne, visibly dying, drinks from the cup and is miraculously restored, declaring she has been granted time. As relief seems certain, Ancel, the Knight of Hearts, strikes Una from her blind side with a precise thrust.
Una rises and fights Ancel in a savage duel, ignoring her mortal wound to break him down and finally split his chest with Valiance. Owen reaches her as they fall; Una dies in his arms after pleading for him to come back and to wait beneath the yew tree.
As Owen dissociates in grief, the rejuvenated queen soothes him—and speaks in Owen’s modern tongue. She praises “Corporal Mallory,” revealing herself as Vivian Rolfe, exposing that the restored queen has been Rolfe all along and hinting at deeper orchestration of Owen’s mission and Una’s end.
