Chapter 3

Overview

Owen cautiously verifies the manuscript, translates its opening, and sends samples to Professor Sawbridge. When the book vanishes, a cryptic summons draws him to the capitol amid his father’s protest. Minister Vivian Rolfe reveals the recovered volume—now blank—and coercively binds Owen to author it, stabbing his hand to compel compliance.

Summary

Owen spends a week circling the mysterious Una manuscript: testing his memory, examining ink and paper, and finally translating the opening line, which brings unexpected calm. Convinced by the voice and grief in the text, he mails early translations to Professor Sawbridge and trades skeptical telegrams as she hurries back from an excavation.

On the seventh day the book disappears, replaced by a card with an address. Armed and anxious, Owen follows it to the capitol, threading past a protest where his estranged father urges him to join. Owen refuses and is quietly escorted inside.

Minister Vivian Rolfe greets him, revealing political pressure to resign and a desire to rekindle national conviction through Una’s story. She produces the very book, praises Owen’s scholarship, and frames the legend as the nation’s binding narrative that must be retold.

When Owen opens the volume, every page is blank. Vivian admits it and, declaring the country’s need, stabs a letter opener through his hand, pinning it to the book. As Owen’s blood spreads across the paper and his senses tilt—pine and snow replacing smoke—Vivian urges him on, saying, “She needs you, Owen.”
