Chapter 5

Overview

After days of uneasy routine, Owen records Una’s legendary past—Yvanne’s rise, Ancel’s oath, the crusades, and the queen’s later illness. Owen coaxes Una to sleep, triggering a prophetic dream of the dragon and grail. He confirms Cloven Hill but conceals her fate. Recommitted, Una rides north and brings Owen, revealing the guiding voice was his.

Summary

Days pass in repetition at the forest hut. Owen observes Una’s silence, her fierce care for the ill-tempered bay, and her wary distance. At night he writes, fascinated by Valiance’s impossible craftsmanship, recalling Professor Sawbridge’s doubts about such legends.

Owen composes a sweeping account of Una’s early service to Yvanne: the fall of the False Kings, Ancel of Ulwin’s defeat and oath, Una’s quest for the Crown of Dominion, and the ensuing crusades that forged the unified realm under one God and one flag. The tale culminates with Yvanne’s later illness and her summons for one last thing to be won.

Back in the hut, Owen asks about that summons. Una bluntly corrects the hagiographies, admitting she was drunk and profane when messengers came. Seeing her fear of sleep, Owen volunteers to tend the fire so she can rest, hoping to spark the prophesied dream that will set her back on the quest.

Una dreams of the dead dragon, the cup, and a terrible voice. Owen identifies Cloven Hill, confirming his future knowledge. Pressed about outcomes, he withholds the truth of her death to preserve Dominion’s fate, telling her the queen is healed and the kingdom prospers, and acknowledging this is indeed her last quest.

Hope returns to Una; she orders departure and unexpectedly offers Owen a place in the saddle. As they ride north, the story feels aligned again. Una confides that the voice in her dream was not God’s—it was Owen’s—binding them to the quest together.
