Chapter 14
Overview
In the catacombs, Vivian reveals she has orchestrated countless time loops to forge Una’s legend and Dominion’s fate. She forces Owen to finish the book with a monarchy-restoring prophecy, after torturing and isolating him. Owen hides a code and vows to save Una, but Vivian ends the loop, foreclosing another attempt.
Summary
After Una dies, Owen/Mallory is taken to a tower, then brought to the catacombs where Queen Vivian (who is also Yvanne) lays Una out amid staged splendor. Vivian delivers a calculated speech about fate and Dominion. Owen demands to know how many loops there have been and punches her.
Vivian admits she has been resetting events for years, altering key moments to forge Una into a perfect champion and to shape public myth, even recasting Ancel as a traitor to harden the story. She reveals she came back early, invented her lineage, and used repetition so bodies remember what minds forget.
Vivian explains why tragedy is required: Una’s death powers a unifying war legend. She choreographed the theft of crown and grail to fulfill a new prophecy restoring the monarchy. Owen rejects the calculus, and guards beat and imprison him in the freezing tower until Vivian returns with paper, commanding him to finish the book with the prophecy.
Owen writes under duress, inserting the theft and prophecy and hiding a coded punctuation trail. Vivian praises the work and hands him the knife to cut his palm and the book, sending him back. He vows to remember more next time and save Una.
As Owen places his bleeding hand on the book, Vivian agrees he would succeed—then calmly declares there will be no next time, ending the loop as the world falls away.
