Chapter 21

Overview

Owen awakens in an altered, diminished Dominion shaped by Vivian, who still controls the levers of power. He discovers Sawbridge’s compliance bought by Sylvie’s captivity, bids his father a painful farewell, and accepts he cannot run. At the overgrown Cavallon Keep, Vivian arms him and sends him back into the book to restart the cycle.

Summary

Years after the war, Owen receives the book from Vivian Rolfe and realizes history has been reset: Dominion is smaller, its Chancellor parrots Vivian’s rhetoric, and Cantford is diminished. Vivian has restored his old damaged voice and insinuated control across the state, proving Dominion still belongs to her.

Jeremy Harrison intrudes, revealing his dependence on Vivian, who funded his rise to keep Owen watched. Vivian prepares to send Owen back through the book, but he asks to say his goodbyes, which genuinely puzzles her.

Owen visits Professor Gilda Sawbridge and finds her a public supporter of the regime. Pressed, she admits Harrison exposed her relationship with archivist Sylvie Shaw; instead of charges, agents abducted Sylvie. To keep Sylvie safe, Sawbridge writes propaganda and refuses to flee, choosing to stand and fight if needed. She regains her old voice long enough to call Owen’s manuscript “hog swill.”

Owen then visits his father in Queenswald. Their habitual argument softens into honesty: his father once dreamed of the sea but sacrificed it for injury and a baby. Testing the idea of escape, Owen learns his father won’t run, bound by love and debts to people who rely on him. Realizing love makes people stand and fight, Owen admits he cannot run either.

Following Vivian’s address, Owen climbs to the forgotten ruins of Cavallon Keep. Among trees caging the old halls, Vivian waits on the throne’s plinth. She withholds the book, issues a notebook, a revolver, three bullets, and her silver knife, promising it is “almost done.” Owen counters with his own lie, then cuts his finger, touches the book’s page, smells winter, and is taken—sent back into the story once more.
