Chapter 22

Overview

Owen and Una reunite at the yew and reclaim their agency from Vivian: Owen re-knights Una to serve her own heart and family. Traveling north, they plant counter-stories, change Una’s device, and face hostile subjects. Una slays the last dragon and retrieves the grail. They arrive at Cavallon prepared to trigger their plan and, if possible, spare Ancel.

Summary

At the yew, Una approaches Owen not as an executioner but as a grieving lover. They hold each other, then reckon with Vivian’s cycles of control and her claim to be Una’s mother. Owen rejects that claim, defining motherhood by love and protection. When running or submission offers no freedom, Owen draws Valiance and, in a deliberate ritual, re-knights Una—binding her not to crown or queen but to her own heart and their children.

At first light they leave the Queen’s Wood. Owen stops recording old legends and instead seeds new, quiet tales of a free green refuge guarded by a nameless knight. He commissions a new device for Una’s scraped shield: a white tree on green. Traveling off the queen’s roads, Una moves through towns unrecognized, more human than myth.

In a hostile Hyllish village, a scarred man spits on Una. Owen nearly strikes him, but Una restrains violence, recognizes his grief from the Bastion, apologizes, and gives the family their purse in exchange for furs. As they depart, Owen publicly directs the villagers toward safety in the Queen’s Wood.

North at Cloven Hill, Una enters a reeking cave and swiftly kills Dominion’s last dragon, tossing the grail to Owen as they flee. She speculates Vivian destroyed dragons for politics, spectacle, or because they embodied freedom beyond any law.

On the road to Cavallon, their lovemaking turns fierce and death-tinged. Una mourns Ancel—mentor, rival, and brother-in-arms—and vows to spare him if possible, even as they acknowledge Vivian ordered his betrayal.

Cavallon Keep rises, grand and fragile. Owen readies his revolver and confirms the rescue signal. Una, bearing the white-tree shield, pledges to come at his call by her life—though Owen begs it be not by her death—and spurs Hen toward the gates, smiling into the coming confrontation.
