20: The Basement
Overview
January and Gus slip into an easy domestic rhythm that deepens their bond. January discovers Gus’s high school past and grief, and they plan Pete and Maggie’s Fourth of July and a New Eden visit. Financial strain and Sonya’s email raise stakes. In the basement, grief meets desire as January and Gus finally give in physically.
Summary
January and Gus pull an all-night movie binge and fall asleep on the couch, signaling a new domestic ease. In the morning, January texts with Shadi, who announces she’s in love and will visit in August instead of now. An email from Sonya declines buying the porch furniture but asks to talk, adding tension.
After a writing day and more house cleanout, January snoops Gus’s shelves and finds his high school yearbook. As they flirt, January notices his senior photo’s hollowed look. Gus shares that his mother died when he was a sophomore and he later dropped out, revealing deeper roots of his guardedness.
They discuss schedules: Gus must attend Pete and Maggie’s July Fourth and needs a New Eden visit soon, so he plans the field trip for Saturday. January will join unless Sonya (Pete’s friend and January’s father’s mistress) will be there; Gus promises to check. Money worries keep January from party contributions.
January steels herself to sort the basement, triggering sharp grief over her father. Gus arrives, reassures her there’s no need to bring anything to the party, and their banter slides into charged proximity. Desire overtakes them: they press together, kiss hard, undress to skin and lace, and continue with growing urgency.
The chapter closes mid-escalation, marking a decisive shift from flirtation to physical intimacy while unresolved threads—Sonya’s request to talk, July Fourth, and the New Eden trip—loom ahead.
