28: Nine Months Later
Overview
Nine months after reconciling, January and Gus finalize new novels under their real names and settle into a shared life between homes. Reading each other’s manuscripts on the beach, they debate happiness and endings. Gus’s advance copies arrive with a dedication to January, and they reaffirm a lasting happy-for-now.
Summary
January and Gus prepare to exchange their nearly finished books. Both have sold new manuscripts under their real names, stepping away from pen names while embracing projects that diverge from their usual work. January feels protective of The Great Family Marconi, buoyed by Anya’s support despite a mixed trade review.
They settle into a rhythm of shared living between Gus’s beach house and January’s apartment above a music store, making small domestic rituals of inconveniences and comforts. On the eve of the anniversary of Naomi leaving Gus, they choose a quiet plan: read each other’s books on the beach.
Across winter memories and a summer afternoon, January finishes Gus’s The Cup Is Already Broken first. The novel ends with Travis and Doris dying suddenly after escaping a cult, which makes January cry. Gus argues it is still a happy ending because they were together, free, and content in their final moment, prompting January to reflect on beauty and loss.
They compare outcomes: Gus sees hope in January’s book between Eleanor and Nick, while January insists her ending isn’t neatly tied. They agree each wrote the truest version of happy and sad that they believe in.
Back at the house, Gus’s advance copies arrive. January opens one and finds the dedication, “For January, I don’t care how the story ends as long as I spend it with you.” Moved, she and Gus affirm their love. January reframes happily-ever-after as a chain of “happy-for-nows,” recognizing this day as another perfect one she believes can sustain them.
