25: The Letters

Overview

Sonya confronts January with the truth of her relationship with Walt, revealing its timelines and limits. Spurred by Walt’s birthday letter, January opens the safe, finding decades of letters and a marina key. She discovers Walt’s sailboat and reads the letters, including his confession of the affair and reaffirmation of love, reframing her grief.

Summary

On the porch, January tries to dismiss Sonya, but Sonya insists on explaining her history with Walt. She recounts meeting him as teens, reconnecting during his separation, and briefly planning a life together before learning of Shadi’s cancer. When Shadi improved, contact faded; when the cancer returned, they resumed, knowing it could not last. Sonya admits shame and heartbreak, saying Walt asked her to deliver a key and letter to January after his death.

January’s anger centers on what she can never know about Walt. Sonya urges her to read “the letters,” revealing there are many. After Sonya leaves, January retrieves the envelope she has avoided and reads Walt’s new birthday letter, which includes an apology, fears about the truth, and a code: 1401 Queen’s Beach Lane. The note points to the safe in the master bedroom.

January opens the safe with her birthday as the code and finds a stack of letters—one for every year of her life—and a marina key. She drives to Sweet Harbor Marina and discovers Walt’s white sailboat named January. Sitting aboard, she grapples with trust, love, and the messiness of life before opening the earliest letter.

Through the letters, Walt narrates her milestones and his own history, from her birth to childhood stories of North Bear Shores, parenting fears, and pride in January’s growth. In later letters he confesses the affair with Sonya during Shadi’s illness, his confusion and self-reproach, and his determination to repair his marriage. He affirms that Shadi knows and allowed him to tell January in his own time.

Walt’s final letter for her twenty-eighth birthday declares that his defining identity is being January’s father, that he is happy again, and that even with mistakes, his love for her is unwavering. January, holding tangible pieces of him, reframes her grief with this fuller, complicated truth.
