24: The Book

Overview

January confronts her father’s bedroom and discovers a locked safe she can’t open, then channels her turmoil into finishing a new, more hopeful draft. At their bookstore event, Gus’s ex, Naomi, unexpectedly shows up, rattling January. Overwhelmed, she leaves—only to find Sonya waiting to finally explain everything.

Summary

January and Gus enter the master bedroom to face the remnants of January’s father’s secret life. Drawers are empty, but a hidden safe under a tablecloth remains locked, deepening January’s unease. Deciding she can’t chase every answer now, January refocuses on finishing her book.

January banishes distractions, writes obsessively, and reaches the final chapter by the early hours of August second. Unsatisfied with a bleak end, she adds a quiet, hopeful image and emails the draft to Anya. After printing it, she returns to find Gus supportive; they compare timelines and joke about fate as they prepare for the bookstore event.

At Pete and Maggie’s shop, a small, friendly audience gathers. Mid-introductions, Gus spots Naomi, his estranged wife, and shuts down emotionally. January powers through the Q&A while fighting nausea and panic, watching Naomi linger with clear intent to speak to Gus.

When the signing ends, Gus says he should see why Naomi is there. January, shaken and unable to face it, retreats through the back and walks home in tears, fearing what Naomi’s presence could mean for her and Gus.

On January’s dark porch, Sonya—her father’s longtime partner—appears and asks for five minutes to finally explain everything she has written down, promising answers January has needed all summer.
