14: The Rule

Overview

January and Gus recover from a vulnerable night with exchanged numbers and a planned outing. A drive-in triple feature escalates into a charged makeout, cut short by staff, after which Gus vows it won’t happen again and vanishes for days. Alone, January spirals, evades Sonya, and channels her turmoil into shaping a darker, anti-romance novel.

Summary

January spends Saturday morning painstakingly researching and drafting her historical novel. Gus appears across their facing kitchen tables with a note apologizing for getting weird; they exchange phone numbers but keep up their note routine. After chores, January visits the beach, breaks down from loneliness, and suffers a seagull incident. Gus finds her, offers an awkward but comforting hug, and they reset for the evening’s plan.

January drives Gus to a Meg Ryan triple-feature at a drive-in. They stock up on concessions, set up a blanket-and-beer nest in the car, and banter about rom-coms. Physical closeness grows into persistent, mutual touching and mounting tension until they finally kiss—slowly and intensely—escalating to straddling in the car.

A staffer interrupts with a flashlight, scolding them. Embarrassed, they stop, and before leaving, Gus gives January one last slow kiss and says, “Won’t happen again.” They head home in charged silence.

On Sunday, Gus doesn’t appear. January anxiously monitors her phone, fields work messages from Anya and Pete, ignores an email from Sonya, and texts with Shadi about a budding fling. Memories of the kiss alternate with self-reproach and longing. A grocery run turns into a panicked retreat when January spots Sonya; she shops elsewhere and returns shaken. Gus’s car remains gone through Monday night.

By Tuesday, January resolves to detach emotionally and pour herself into writing. She outlines a weeklong circus stop in Oklahoma, pressure-cooking secrets, debt, a traumatized mother with a gun, and Eleanor’s ill-fated romance—an intentionally anti-romance arc that mirrors January’s guarded state.
