27: The Rain

Overview

Through a night of storms, Shadi comforts January as she grieves and admits she has fallen for Gus. At dawn, Gus arrives and confesses Naomi asked to reconcile, but he chooses January. Accepting impermanence, they agree to be “happy for now” and share a rain-soaked dance, recommitting to each other.

Summary

All night during rolling storms, January and Shadi talk, cry, and reflect on love. Shadi frames “falling” as breathtaking rather than just pain and admits she senses January has truly fallen in love. Their friendship deepens as January credits finding Shadi with once giving her that same awe.

At dawn, pounding at the door reveals Gus. January hesitates, and when she decides to answer, Gus is gone. Outside in the flooded street, she despairs—until Gus’s porch light and loud music cue his return. He crosses to her in the rain and, keeping his promise to learn, sways with January, trying to speak over the music.

January asks about the woman from the event—Naomi. Gus explains they got a drink and that Naomi wants to try again; he believes he could forgive her and even imagine being with her. January braces for heartbreak as he describes needing time to think.

Gus then clarifies his realization: while reconciliation with Naomi is conceivable, his vision of marriage and daily life feels right with January. He trusts January more than anyone and wants to build an ordinary, joyful life with her—laundry, conversations, and all—because any time loving her would be worth the risk.

January, still wary, asks what happens if they don’t get a happy ending. Gus proposes they embrace “happy for now.” January accepts the present over guarantees. They hold each other and learn to dance in the rain, recommitting to the relationship on honest, provisional terms.
