Overview
January and Gus’s chemistry intensifies after a carnival night of shared story-building and vulnerability. They trade painful family histories, clarifying Gus’s drive to write about New Eden and January’s shifting view of love. January overhauls her book, their collaboration deepens, and a no-show interview at Olive Garden culminates in intimate, clandestine hand-holding.
Summary
After a slow, neon-lit carnival night, January and Gus build a dark cult story together, revealing their creative synergy. January gets sick; Gus, despite a vomit phobia from childhood, briefly helps, exposing a surprising vulnerability. On the drive home, playful teasing turns charged as they revisit an old college night and January shares her parents’ Esmeralda-at-the-carnival meet-cute and the ache of her father’s infidelity.
Gus remembers January’s book dedication and calls it beautiful, softening her defenses. He then opens up: his mother stayed with an abusive father, and his unresolved need to understand why fuels his New Eden project. January recognizes their different artistic impulses—her search for safe love vs. his quest to comprehend pain—yet they feel seen by one another.
Inspired, January performs “surgery” on her manuscript: shifting to an early-20th-century circus family, renaming characters, weaving secrets, and channeling truths she can’t write directly about her parents. She and Gus establish a noon writing ritual, trading increasingly elaborate window notes that evolve from aphorisms to delirious, funny encouragement, and they spend evenings across their decks discussing work, pasts, and possibilities.
For research, they drive to meet Dave, a former New Eden member whose father died in the fire. At the Olive Garden, Dave never shows, prompting Gus to explain that sources often get spooked. They order bright blue drinks instead, banter about missed homecomings, and the air between them turns electric.
Probing gently, January learns Gus associates “Augustus” with his father’s rage and disapproval. Gus invites January’s story; she admits a confident, only-child upbringing and the shock of losing her faith in romantic certainties. Comfort replaces cynicism as he validates her. Under the table, their knees touch, fingers find each other, and they quietly hold hands until the check comes—an unmistakable step from rivalry toward intimacy.
