5: The Labradors
Overview
January faces mounting pressure from Anya to deliver a long-overdue manuscript by September, but writer’s block persists. After a night of procrastination and seeing Augustus Everett working next door, she attends Pete’s book club. There, January is blindsided when Sonya—the woman tied to her father’s affair—appears.
Summary
Driving from town, January reassures her agent Anya she can deliver a manuscript by September 1, despite admitting she hasn’t started it. She promises to avoid distractions, buys groceries for a writing push, and heads home determined to produce words.
January struggles to draft, winning spider solitaire more than writing and texting Shadi about seeing college rival Augustus Everett. She reminisces about his old jab that she was a “fairy princess,” underscoring her insecurity. That night, with wine and doubt, she steps onto the deck and spots Gus pacing and typing, recognizing the familiar rhythm of a writer at work.
On Monday evening, January goes to Pete’s pink Victorian for book club amid a thunderstorm. Pete welcomes her exuberantly, and January meets Maggie (Pete’s wife) and Lauren. The cozy, crowded room—complete with three Labradors—offers a temporary refuge from her block and deadline anxiety.
Then Pete introduces Sonya. The sight of the woman connected to January’s father’s affair jolts January; her body reacts with shock as Sonya meekly greets her. The chapter ends on this confrontation’s precipice, heightening personal stakes alongside January’s creative crisis.
