9: The Manuscript
Overview
January wakes, trades texts with Shadi about a hookup, and spots Gus across the lake as both settle into work. Spurred by grief and memories of arguing with her mother after the funeral, January finally writes, shaping a manuscript about her father’s affair. She set plans to organize the house and prepare for the genre-swap research.
Summary
January wakes without a hangover to texts from Shadi recounting a late-night hookup. Seeking routine, January makes coffee, steps onto the deck, and lists goals: define her new book, plan Saturday’s rom-com research for Gus, retrieve her car, tackle the upstairs storage room, and move into the downstairs bedroom.
She glances across to Gus’s house, catches him pulling on a T-shirt, and they exchange a wry mug-raise through their windows. The small contact nudges January toward work on her own project and the terms of their genre-swap bet.
Sitting down to write, January confronts what dark stories entail. A surge of grief brings back the post-funeral drive with her mother, when January demanded answers about Sonya and her mother refused to talk. Remembering the years she performed “okay” for her parents, January recognizes her bottled pain and her need to stop pretending.
This unlocks her writing. She begins a third-person manuscript opening with meeting her father’s lover at his funeral, then traces how romance once became her lifeline during her mother’s cancer treatments. She reflects on her bond with her father, their shared habits, and worries these likenesses might signal a flaw in her capacity for love.
January continues drafting, imagining winter on the lake and recalling her father’s vivid language. The session becomes catharsis: words finally flow after months of paralysis, even as she questions whether the love she writes about exists. She closes the morning with pragmatic plans to organize the house and continue research for the bet.
