Chapter 8
Overview
Laurel is shown items from Ellie’s rucksack found in woods near Dover, including Hanna’s missing passport. Detectives suggest Ellie may have run away to Europe, which Laurel disputes, recalling a later burglary she once thought was Ellie. The scene ends with the discovery of human remains, escalating the case.
Summary
Laurel arrives at the station, tense and alone, until Paul is brought in to join her. Detective Dane leads them to an interview room and presents photographs of items unearthed in woods near Dover after a dog walker’s terrier exposed a buried bag.
Laurel recognizes Ellie’s rucksack and the clothes and school items she had the day she vanished. Among them is a passport that Laurel initially assumes is Ellie’s, but it is actually Hanna’s, which the family had believed lost.
Dane posits a theory that Ellie may have run away to Europe, citing the presence of a passport and evidence of heavy wear on the clothes. Laurel challenges the logic, pointing out the items match what Ellie carried at fifteen, not a later departure, and recoils at the image of Ellie wearing the same clothes for years.
Searching for an explanation, Laurel recalls a post-disappearance burglary with no forced entry and wonders if Ellie had taken Hanna’s passport then. Before any conclusion is reached, another officer interrupts: human remains have been found. Shocked, Laurel grips Paul’s hand as the investigation takes a grave turn.
