Chapter 22
Overview
Laurel and Hanna meet Floyd and Poppy for a joint birthday dinner joined by Paul, Bonny, Jake, and Blue. The evening goes smoothly, but Poppy’s eloquent toast and views on fiction strikingly mirror Ellie, unnerving Laurel and Paul. Despite the unease, cordial bonds form and Paul reassures Laurel she deserves happiness.
Summary
Laurel collects Hanna for their joint birthday dinner, accidentally saying Ellie chose her dress before correcting to Poppy, revealing lingering grief. They arrive nervous about possible awkward guests, but only Floyd and Poppy are initially there, easing Laurel’s anxiety.
Paul, Bonny, Jake, and Blue soon join. Bonny warmly embraces Laurel, setting a generous tone, while Floyd and Paul share a light moment over matching suits and socks. The group settles; Blue remains withdrawn but the atmosphere largely holds.
When a toast is needed, Poppy stands and delivers a polished tribute to Laurel, Hanna, and “happy families,” momentarily highlighting the strangeness of the gathering. Bonny reassures Laurel she has long wanted this meeting and understands Laurel’s timing. Paul gifts Laurel The Goldfinch.
Poppy praises the book and declares that stories are the only real thing, echoing a phrase Ellie once used. Laurel and Paul exchange a disturbed look, recognizing the uncanny similarity between Poppy and Ellie.
As they leave, Paul quietly notes Poppy’s resemblance to Ellie and jokes that Laurel has found a “lookalike family,” then steps back, affirming he likes Floyd. Their familiar banter steadies Laurel, and Paul tells her she deserves this happiness, which Laurel tentatively accepts.
